New Jersey Golf Takes Center Stage: A Summer of Surprises!

Golf is experiencing a surge in popularity this summer, particularly in New Jersey, and several noteworthy events are contributing to this trend. Among the highlights is the debut of Apple Plus’s series “Stick,” featuring Owen Wilson as a pro golfer mentoring a young talent. Additionally, the much-anticipated “Happy Gilmore 2,” starring Adam Sandler, has begun streaming on Netflix, showcasing scenes filmed throughout New Jersey.

Adding to this excitement is local golfer Chris Gotterup, a native of Little Silver, New Jersey, who recently captured the spotlight by winning the Scottish Open in July 2025, defeating renowned player Rory McIlroy. Gotterup’s remarkable skills were further showcased as he secured third place at the British Open this past weekend. Coincidentally, he celebrated his 26th birthday while in Northern Ireland, receiving a birthday cake from Sky Sports, which was notably presented on air.

Gotterup’s journey began at Rutgers University, where he initially started his collegiate golf career before transferring to Oklahoma. He proudly embraces his New Jersey roots amid rising competition, now finding himself in the PGA ranks alongside fellow New Jersey golfers Max Greyserman from Short Hills and Ryan McCormick from Middletown. Greyserman has seen success this year by progressing through three major championship cuts, while McCormick has faced challenges, notably a unique attempt to maintain focus on the Korn Ferry Tour by taping his mouth shut—a humorous situation reminiscent of comedic scenes from “Happy Gilmore.”

As golf continues to flourish, New Jersey’s presence in the sport is becoming more prominent, with local talent like Gotterup showcasing their abilities on international stages. This wave provides a hopeful outlook for golf enthusiasts in the region, proving that the Garden State can produce world-class athletes who may inspire future generations of golfers.
