New Initiative Aims to Empower Queer Voices in Theatre

Gideon Glick, an actor and writer, along with producer-director James Will McBride, are spearheading a new initiative called Blue Roses Project, a not-for-profit organization aimed at fostering new theatrical works while emphasizing diverse voices. This project seeks to connect local artists from New Orleans with theatre professionals from across the nation, creating an ecosystem where emerging queer playwrights can authentically represent contemporary American life.

The Board of Directors for Blue Roses Project is impressive, featuring industry leaders such as Shane Marshall Brown, a Broadway publicist known for his work on productions like “Hamilton,” and Tony Award-winning actors Jonathan Groff and Celia Keenan-Bolger. The board also includes Jaclyn Moore, who has a background in shows like “Queer as Folk,” and Broadway producer Dale A. Mott.

The initiative arises from the increasing challenges faced by regional theaters, especially following the COVID pandemic, which led to significant cuts in play development programs. With over 575 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in the U.S. this year alone, the project aims to counteract the risks of censorship facing queer narratives.

Glick emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ voices, stating, “Blue Roses Project is vital because it provides a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ+ voices to create, explore, and share stories at a time when queer narratives are increasingly under threat.” Groff echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in being part of a project that addresses a significant need in the theatre community.

The first year’s goals for Blue Roses Project include hosting a 29-hour workshop reading featuring an emerging queer playwright and building collaborations that involve both local and nationally-acclaimed talent. Partnerships with local LGBTQ+ organizations will contribute to root the work in New Orleans’s rich and vibrant community.

This project not only promises to nurture emerging talent but also aims to enrich the cultural landscape of contemporary theatre during a time when inclusivity is crucial.
