Aaron Pierre has officially joined HBO’s upcoming Green Lantern series, titled “Lanterns,” as John Stewart. Earlier reports indicated that Kyle Chandler was in discussions for the role of Hal Jordan. Various actors, such as Stephan James and Damson Idris, were also considered for Stewart’s character.
The series is being produced by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, and it draws inspiration from DC’s “Green Lantern” comics. It received an order for eight episodes back in June and was initially set to be a Max original before transitioning to HBO as part of a new content strategy.
According to the official description, the series will center around “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic police officers who become embroiled in a dark, Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland.”
Pierre recently starred in the Netflix hit “Rebel Ridge,” which premiered on September 6 and has consistently ranked in the streaming platform’s top 10 English-language films, even hitting the number one spot for three weeks. His previous television roles include portraying Malcolm X in National Geographic’s “Genius: MLK/X” and leading in Barry Jenkins’ limited series “The Underground Railroad.” He also appeared in the DC series “Krypton” as Dev-Em and has been featured in films such as “Foe,” “Brother,” and “Old.” Additionally, Pierre will voice Mufasa in Jenkins’ forthcoming “Lion King” prequel for Disney.
Pierre’s representation includes WME, Anonymous Content, Hamilton Hodell, Sloane Offer, and Narrative.
“Lanterns” is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who also serve as executive producers alongside James Hawes, the latter of whom is set to direct the first two episodes.
