A sequel to PlayStation’s “Ghost of Tsushima,” developed by Sucker Punch Productions, is set to be released in 2025. The new game, titled “Ghost of Yōtei,” will introduce a fresh protagonist named Atsu and feature an entirely new storyline.
Originally launched in 2020, “Ghost of Tsushima” is an action-adventure title centered on Jin Sakai, a samurai tasked with defending Tsushima Island during Japan’s first Mongol invasion. The game presents players with the dilemma of adhering to the warrior code while also employing less honorable tactics to protect the island and reduce casualties.
The multiplayer extension, “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” debuted in October 2020 and became a standalone product in September 2021.
Sucker Punch Productions’ communications manager Andrew Goldfarb shared insights about the new installment in a PlayStation blog post. He emphasized their commitment to preserving the foundational elements of “Ghost of Tsushima,” such as embodying a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, allowing players the freedom to explore, and showcasing the world’s beauty. However, he also noted the team’s desire to innovate by moving beyond Jin Sakai’s narrative and focusing on the broader concept of the “Ghost.” This approach inspired the creation of “Ghost of Yōtei,” which will feature a new hero, a different storyline, and a new region in Japan.
According to Sucker Punch, the protagonist Atsu’s journey occurs in 1603, more than 300 years after Jin Sakai’s adventures. The setting will be around Mount Yōtei, located in Ezo, which is present-day Hokkaido. During that time, this area was not under Japan’s control and was characterized by vast grasslands, snowy tundras, and unpredictable challenges. This contrasts sharply with the structured existence of the samurai clans on Tsushima, setting the stage for an original tale that the developers are eager to share.
The sequel’s announcement was part of PlayStation’s State of Play presentation, where Sony Interactive Entertainment unveiled several other gaming projects. Highlights included a release date for “Lego Horizon Adventures” on November 14, a feature of Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow in the upcoming “Sonic X Shadow Generations” movie pack, a forthcoming free expansion for “Astro Bot,” and a sneak peek at gameplay for EA’s “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” among other updates.
This State of Play event followed the revelation of PlayStation’s next console, the PS5 Pro, which is set to launch in November.
