A new feature-length documentary titled “A Modern Art Masterpiece: The Untold Story Of Full Metal Jacket” has finished filming in major cities such as London, New York, and Los Angeles, with the film’s lead actor, Matthew Modine, serving as one of its producers. Directed by Stephen Rigg, this film offers an in-depth exploration of the making of Stanley Kubrick’s influential Vietnam War movie.
The documentary is constructed from over thirty new interviews featuring collaborators of Kubrick, including Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Arliss Howard. It also integrates previously unheard audio interviews with Kubrick and unique recordings of the director conducting rehearsals with the actors at Pinewood Studios in 1986. This rare material promises to provide viewers with an unprecedented look behind the scenes of a cinematic landmark.
Produced by Rigg, known for “Kubrick’s Universe,” alongside Hank Starrs of “RoboDoc,” the documentary is a collaboration with Modine and Adam Rackoff’s US-based company, Cinco Dedos Peliculas, as well as SuperCloud Studios, a media company focusing on content distribution and development.
Executive producers for the project include Rich Kane, James Hancock, four-time Emmy-winning producer Jarratt Carson, Amer Hilal, and Adrian Lord. Speaking about the documentary, Rigg emphasized its goal of shedding light on the enigmatic production of “Full Metal Jacket.” He stated, “Through the voices of those who were there, guided by Stanley Kubrick’s own words, our film finally tells the full story.” Rigg added that the film serves as more than just a retrospective; it immerses audiences in the intense atmosphere of the 1980s film set.
“Full Metal Jacket,” which was Kubrick’s twelfth film, examines the grim realities of the Vietnam War through the eyes of U.S. Marines, detailing their journey from boot camp to the harrowing battlefield. The film features a notable cast, including Modine as Pvt. Joker, alongside Adam Baldwin, R. Lee Ermey, D’Onofrio, and Dorian Harewood.
Producer Hank Starrs expressed pride in the project, stating, “There has never been a documentary film quite like A Modern Art Masterpiece, and our unique access to archival materials, exclusive interviews, and commitment to a stunning visual ethos make this film a truly unique production.”
This documentary not only promises to enrich the legacy of “Full Metal Jacket” but also aims to provide fans and newcomers alike with a deeper understanding of Kubrick’s creative genius and the exceptional talent that contributed to this iconic film. The inclusion of behind-the-scenes images enhances the anticipation, inviting audiences to witness the extraordinary journey of a masterpiece realized.
