In a notable development, FMF has launched a new training program in collaboration with Australian partners Azelis, which aims to equip Fijian bakers with skills that align with international standards, allowing them to flourish in their homeland.

This initiative is focused on empowering local talent with modern baking techniques, thereby reducing the inclination for individuals to seek employment opportunities abroad. FMF Bakery Manager Sachin Kumar highlighted the program’s dedication to enhancing both the industry and the community, asserting that it guarantees quality products are produced by skilled hands in Fiji. “We want to retain our talent here in Fiji and help our bakers create products that can compete with those available internationally,” he remarked.

In the upcoming months, the training program will broaden its scope to encompass bakeries, hotels, and airlines across various regions, offering bakers from different backgrounds the chance to learn from field experts. Ross Young, Azelis’ Bakery Account Manager Export, underscored the initiative’s objective: to elevate standards and share decades of expertise with the next generation of bakers. “Our aim is to transfer our experience from Australia and support Fiji’s bakers in developing confidence while producing quality products,” he stated.

This initiative resonates with broader efforts in Fiji to uplift local industries and encourage entrepreneurship. Similar projects, including those undertaken by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, focus on providing vocational training for various individuals, including marginalized groups.
