New road traffic regulations have been implemented as of January 22, 2026, following the official publication of the Land Transport (Fees and Penalties) (Amendment) Regulations 2026. These new laws, enacted under the Land Transport Act 1998 after consultations with the Land Transport Authority, introduce significant updates to fines, demerit points, and suspension penalties related to various traffic violations.

One of the most notable changes includes the introduction of penalties for failing to stop and weigh, with a first offence resulting in a $300 fine and one demerit point. For a second offence, the penalty increases to $600 and two demerit points, escalating to $900 and three demerit points for subsequent offences, along with higher maximum penalties that can be imposed.

Additionally, penalties for illegal parking or stopping have been updated. Drivers will now incur a fixed penalty of $100 and receive one demerit point for these infractions, with possible additional fines and suspension penalties applicable for more serious violations.

Speeding fines have also undergone restructuring. Those exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 km/h will face a $50 fine and one demerit point. A fine of $75 and two demerit points will be applied for exceeding the limit by 15–29 km/h, while exceeding the limit by 30 km/h or more will invoke a $100 fine and three demerit points. Enhanced penalties, including potential suspension of driving licenses, can be imposed across all categories.

The amendments were signed into law by Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport. Authorities are encouraging drivers to become familiar with these updated penalties, emphasizing that these changes are designed to enhance road safety, improve compliance, and mitigate dangerous driving behaviors throughout Fiji. The implementation of these stricter measures represents a proactive step toward creating safer roads for all users.
