New Fiji Airways CEO Declares Spirit of Fiji as World’s Happiest Airline

National carrier Fiji Airways has been named the “Happiest Airline in the World” by its new managing director and CEO, Paul Scurrah. In a welcoming address at the airline’s headquarters in Nadi, Scurrah articulated a vision that aims to encapsulate the warmth and hospitality synonymous with Fiji.

Taking the helm on November 1, Scurrah, who previously led Virgin Australia, commended his team on their notable achievements that have earned the airline significant international accolades. Recently, Fiji Airways distinguished itself at the esteemed APEX Awards in Singapore, winning both Best Cabin Service and Best Food & Beverage in the South Pacific for 2026. These honors, determined by over a million verified passenger votes, highlight the airline’s dedication to quality service and customer satisfaction.

During his address, Scurrah reaffirmed that safety will be the airline’s foremost priority while emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of listening and learning. He acknowledged the necessity for continuous improvement in the aviation sector, particularly in light of lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “Nothing in the airline industry can or should ever be taken for granted.”

Scurrah also expressed gratitude towards his staff, recognizing their professionalism and passion as vital components of the airline’s success. He advocated for teamwork as essential to enhance growth, culture, and the visibility of Fiji Airways as a leading global carrier that embodies the Spirit of Fiji.

Founded in 1951, Fiji Airways—with its subsidiary Fiji Link—has grown significantly, now serving 36 destinations across 14 countries. The airline connects to over 900 destinations worldwide through its membership in the oneworld alliance and plays a pivotal role in promoting Fijian tourism, responsible for 70% of visitors landing in the nation and generating over $1.7 billion in revenue in 2023.

In addition to its recent accolades, Fiji Airways was also recognized as a World Class Airline for 2026, ranking in the top 10 globally according to APEX, which highlights the effectiveness of its strategic initiatives and the dedication of its workforce. The airline’s upward trajectory not only reinforces its ability to provide superior service but also inspires optimism within the competitive aviation landscape.

With a steadfast commitment to excellence and an emphasis on enhancing passenger experiences, Fiji Airways is poised for a bright future, showcasing the rich culture and hospitality of Fiji to the global travel community. The airline continues to serve as a vital contributor to Fiji’s economy and represents a beacon of hope within the global airline industry.
