Steve Tandy has been appointed as the new head coach of Wales’ national rugby team, following a comprehensive selection process to find Warren Gatland’s successor. Tandy, who has been serving as Scotland’s defense coach, is also known for his previous role as head coach of the Ospreys, where he led the team to a Pro 12 title in his first season.
Tandy will officially take on his new responsibilities in September, following Gatland’s departure during the Six Nations. Since then, Cardiff coach Matt Sherratt has been managing the team on an interim basis, achieving a significant victory over Japan, which ended an 18-match losing streak for Wales at the international level.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Tandy stated, “Becoming head coach of my home country is a massive honour and a privilege. I am looking forward to playing a role in the rebuilding phase of Welsh rugby and taking the national team back to competing with the best countries in the world.” He will begin his head coaching tenure with a challenging autumn campaign against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has indicated that Tandy will be committed beyond the upcoming 2027 World Cup, recognizing that he will play a crucial role in a long-term rebuilding process. While assistant coaches have not yet been announced, it is expected that some members of the coaching group from the recent trip to Japan will transition into Tandy’s staff.
WRU CEO Abi Tierney emphasized the significance of this appointment, acknowledging Tandy as a top candidate who represents a key element in their five-year strategy aimed at achieving sustainable success. She noted his ability to connect with a young and talented group of players as a vital asset.
Newly appointed WRU director of rugby and elite performance, Dave Reddin, who played a primary role in Tandy’s hiring, praised his extensive coaching experience and commitment to continuous improvement. Reddin believes that Tandy’s passion and understanding of Welsh rugby will be invaluable in nurturing the potential of the team’s young players.
This new chapter in Welsh rugby under Tandy’s guidance offers a beacon of hope as the team looks to rejuvenate its status in the international arena. With enthusiasm and a strong strategy in place, there’s anticipation that Wales could soon return to form and reclaim a competitive edge on the world stage.
