According to the WHO, the global public health risk posed by the NB.1.8.1 variant is assessed to be low at this time. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that NB.1.8.1 makes up approximately 37% of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., closely following the LP.8.1 variant, which accounts for 38%. Other variants contribute a smaller percentage of cases, highlighting the continued evolution of the virus. Subhash Verma, a microbiology professor, emphasized the potential for NB.1.8.1 to spread more rapidly than its predecessor, indicating a need for ongoing monitoring.

Protection against this variant still strongly hinges on vaccination, with health authorities recommending that everyone over six months get the updated COVID-19 vaccine. However, recent statements from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. indicate potential changes in vaccination recommendations, particularly regarding children and healthy adults, which may influence access and coverage for these vaccines.
