Midlands Technical College has proudly launched its new facility, The CORNERSTONE: Economic Development & Workforce Training Center, located on the Northeast campus in Columbia, South Carolina. Spanning an impressive 41,000 square feet, this state-of-the-art center represents a significant investment of roughly $5 million in the region’s workforce and economic development.
The CORNERSTONE is designed to serve as a critical hub for workforce training and recruitment. Its modern aesthetic and well-equipped space are intended to foster an environment conducive to learning and skill development. The grand opening ceremony, held at 10 a.m., attracted notable attendees, including Governor Henry McMaster, various local officials, and industry leaders. The Columbia Area Development Partnership (CADP), in collaboration with project partners, hosted this impactful event.
During the ceremony, Governor McMaster underscored the facility’s potential to create job opportunities and bolster local businesses, stating, “CORNERSTONE exemplifies the power of communication, cooperation, and collaboration.” Jeff Ruble, CEO of CADP, also pointed out the center’s critical role in advancing the manufacturing sector within the region.
The realization of The CORNERSTONE was made possible through partnerships with several key organizations, including Richland County, the South Carolina Department of Commerce, and readySC. The facility is designed to cater to local industries’ needs, with the capacity to provide training for up to 20,000 community members.
This initiative is viewed as a significant leap forward in addressing workforce readiness challenges. The S.C. Technical College System, represented by Dr. Tim Hardee, emphasizes the importance of offering customized training that aligns with industry demands to keep companies competitive. Dr. Greg Little, President of Midlands Technical College, labeled CORNERSTONE as “the foundation of workforce development in our community.”
Training programs at The CORNERSTONE will focus on various sectors including automotive, energy, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. By effectively bridging the gap between education and industry requirements, the center is positioned to ensure that local businesses have access to a skilled workforce while providing clear career pathways for job seekers in the Midlands area.
