Fiji Opens New Double-Storey Classrooms at Ballantine Memorial School

New Classrooms Spark Hope for Fiji’s Girls’ Education at Ballantine Memorial School

The long-awaited opening of a new double-storey classroom block at Ballantine Memorial School (BMS) marks a significant milestone for the all-girls institution and its surrounding community, fulfilling a promise that has been in the making for over two decades. Celebrated by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, the completion of this project stands as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of the school community.

Revived through a request to the Ministry of Education, this classroom block was constructed over a span of 16 weeks, with a total investment of $660,463.27. Urban Building Solution Pte Ltd executed this project, significantly enhancing the school’s infrastructure by adding eight new classrooms, two staff rooms, and a modern Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility. Furthermore, essential upgrades including reinforced beams, new roofing, enhanced plumbing, and electrical systems have been introduced to create a safe and contemporary learning environment.

During the inauguration, Minister Radrodro underscored the government’s commitment to advancing educational infrastructure across Fiji, emphasizing that this project embodies resilience and collaboration. He praised the ongoing efforts of teachers and school staff in cultivating a nurturing environment for young women, highlighting the critical role of parental and guardian engagement in their children’s education.

The celebratory event coincided with the school’s Family Fun Day, fostering community involvement and showcasing the collaborative spirit needed for successful educational progress. In addition to the new classroom block, the Ministry of Education recognized contributions from the Office of the Prime Minister, which donated 200 desks and chairs to enhance classroom comfort and accessibility. Moreover, the WASH Programme alongside the Ministry of Health provided three 10,000-litre water tanks to bolster the school’s water and sanitation systems.

This opening is part of a wider initiative throughout Fiji aimed at enhancing educational facilities, as evidenced by recent inaugurations at schools such as Vatukaloko Secondary School and Nakorotubu Secondary School, which have also benefitted from new buildings and improved facilities designed to create better learning conditions. As the government continues to invest in educational infrastructure, addressing both health and learning environments, the outlook for students across the nation appears hopeful and promising. The unified efforts of the government, educational institutions, and local communities highlight a positive trajectory towards improved educational opportunities for all Fijian children.
