Rex Heuermann has been indicted for the murder of Valerie Mack, marking the seventh victim in the ongoing Gilgo Beach killings case. The new charge, which was announced in a Suffolk County court on Tuesday, is for second-degree murder. Heuermann has maintained his innocence, stating, “I am not guilty of any of these charges,” during the proceedings.

Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old mother from Philadelphia, was an escort at the time of her disappearance in 2000. Her remains were discovered in November that year. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney emphasized the Mac family’s suffering, stating they represent many families who have faced similar tragedies.

On Tuesday, attorney Gloria Allred, who represents relatives of other alleged victims, offered emotional support to Mack’s parents, presenting them with red roses and affirming that they are not alone in their grief.

Heuermann’s attorney, Michael Brown, reported that Heuermann was taken aback by the new charge and expressed his client’s unwavering denial of the accusations. The next court hearing is set for January 15.

Mack’s remains were initially found in a wooded area in Manorville, and DNA analysis performed in 2020 confirmed her identity, linking evidence to Heuermann’s family members. The investigation has also revealed connections between the dismemberment of Mack and other victims, indicating a pattern in the killings.

Since his arrest in July 2023 for the murders of four women known as the “Gilgo Four,” Heuermann has faced added charges including the murders of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. Authorities are continuing to investigate other potential victims related to this grim case.

The ongoing investigation underscores a collaborative effort by law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and their families, highlighting a commitment to uncovering the truth behind these tragic events.

Overall, the unfolding legal proceedings could represent a pivotal step towards closure for the families of the victims, as the judicial system works to address these heinous crimes.
