Evidence indicates that these camera programs are substantially achieving their goals. A report from the Department of Transportation revealed a remarkable 94% drop in speeding incidents at locations equipped with speed cameras, along with a 14% decrease in serious injury or fatal accidents. Notably, a significant majority of drivers—approximately 74%—received no more than two traffic summonses within a year.
Similarly, the MTA’s Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) program, which deploys cameras on buses to catch drivers obstructing bus lanes, has reported positive outcomes. The ACE program has contributed to a 20% reduction in collisions on monitored bus routes, with only 9% of offenders reoffending for another violation.
Now, the City Council is taking steps to implement a comparable system for alternate-side parking violations. Recently, they passed a resolution urging the state Legislature to allow the installation of cameras on street sweepers, which would automatically issue fines to vehicles parked illegally during designated cleaning periods.
