New Caledonia achieved a significant milestone by defeating Fiji 2-0, marking their qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026™ to be held in Poland. This victory also secures New Caledonia’s place in the finals of the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2025.
Throughout the first half, Fiji demonstrated considerable dominance, generating numerous scoring opportunities. However, New Caledonia’s goalkeeper, Elizabeth Aben, was exceptional in her performance, making critical saves against attempts from Adi Reva, Sereana Naweni, and substitute Emele Vunivalu, keeping the game scoreless.
The tide turned in the second half when New Caledonia managed to score against the run of play. In the 59th minute, Kheiméra Gondou capitalized on a defensive lapse from Fiji, firing a powerful shot into the net to give New Caledonia the lead. Following this, Aziliz Naaoutchoue extended the advantage in the 71st minute, converting after a free kick hit the crossbar and rebounded into play.
This historic win for New Caledonia is notable as it marks their first-ever qualification for a FIFA women’s tournament. They are now set to face either New Zealand or the Cook Islands in the final match, while Fiji will compete in the third-place playoff.
