New Caledonia have celebrated a historic milestone after defeating Fiji 2-0 in the semi-finals of the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, securing a spot in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026 in Poland. This achievement marks New Caledonia’s first qualification for a FIFA women’s event, as they also reach the final of the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship for only the second time in their history.
Despite creating more scoring opportunities, Fiji was unable to capitalize on their chances against New Caledonia’s formidable goalkeeper, Elizabeth Aben, who delivered a standout performance. The match saw a goalless first half, but New Caledonia struck twice in the second half. Kheiméra Gondou opened the scoring in the 59th minute with a powerful shot following a scramble in the box, taking advantage of a defensive slip by Fiji. Shortly after, Aziliz Naaoutchoue extended the lead in the 71st minute, scoring from close range after Deyanera Michel’s header hit the crossbar.
Fiji, eager to chase a second consecutive World Cup appearance after reaching the final in the previous tournament in 2023, struggled to find a breakthrough. They created some promising opportunities, including shots from Adi Reva and Sereana Naweni, but Aben’s outstanding saves thwarted their attempts. Ultimately, Fiji’s efforts were in vain as they couldn’t find the back of the net.
Looking ahead, New Caledonia will face the winner of the second semi-final match involving New Zealand and the Cook Islands in the championship final, while Fiji will have a chance to regroup in the third-place playoff against the match’s runner-up.
This victory not only illustrates the strength of New Caledonia’s talent development in women’s football but also provides hopeful prospects for Fiji as they continue to strengthen their squad for future competitions. The ongoing progress of both teams reflects a positive trend in the development of women’s football in the Oceania region.
