New Caledonia: Pacific Voices Rally for Kanak Self-Determination

A recent report by the Pacific Peoples’ Mission has revealed ongoing injustices faced by the Kanak people under French administration in New Caledonia. The findings suggest that France’s actions are impeding the Kanak people’s right to self-determination, violating international commitments to decolonization.

The mission, led by the Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG), the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC), and the Protestant Church of Kanaky New Caledonia (EPKNC), was conducted in April 2025, following invitations from local Kanak leaders. The report, published this week, outlines systemic inequalities and discrimination that have bred mistrust in France’s governance, as the situation in New Caledonia continues to be volatile.

Pastor Billy Wetewea from the EPKNC emphasized the collective struggle faced by the Kanak people, stating, “We never exist alone but because of others, and we are all linked to a common destiny.” The report highlights alarming trends, including increasing socio-economic disparities, the deterioration of the health system, and an overwhelming majority of Kanak youth now represented in prisons, accounting for over 80% of the incarcerated population.

Criticism was also leveled at France’s postponement of provincial elections, described in the report as a “blatant new attack on the voice of the Caledonian people.” Joey Tau, a mission representative, posited that the situation showcases the need for renewed political dialogue and regional collaboration to foster understanding and trust.

Emele Duituturaga, another mission representative, documented sentiments of collective punishment within the community, illustrating the long-lasting dissatisfaction that has culminated in ongoing crises. The mission urged Pacific governments to advocate for fair elections under international observation, promote dialogue, and keep Kanaky on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories, emphasizing the importance of support from the Pacific community to restore justice and self-determination for the Kanak people.

Despite the deep-rooted challenges, the report represents a hopeful declaration for a united Pacific approach for lasting support beyond times of crisis, reflecting the commitment to aid the Kanak in their quest for autonomy. This mission acts as an embodiment of solidarity and interconnectedness among the peoples of the Pacific, aiming to pave the way for a just future.
