New Caledonia has achieved a remarkable milestone by defeating Fiji 2-0 in the semi-finals of the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, earning a place in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026, which will take place in Poland. This victory marks New Caledonia’s inaugural qualification for a FIFA women’s tournament and only the second time they have reached the final of the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship.
Despite having more scoring chances, Fiji could not convert their opportunities against New Caledonia’s resilient goalkeeper, Elizabeth Aben, who shone with her exceptional performance. The match began without goals in the first half, but New Caledonia made their mark in the second half. Kheiméra Gondou opened the scoring in the 59th minute with a powerful strike arising from a chaotic scenario in the box, capitalizing on a defensive mishap from Fiji. Just minutes later, in the 71st minute, Aziliz Naaoutchoue doubled the lead with a close-range goal after Deyanera Michel’s header hit the crossbar.
Fiji, aiming for a consecutive World Cup appearance after reaching the final in the previous tournament in 2023, found it challenging to break through New Caledonia’s defense. Despite several promising attempts, including shots from Adi Reva and Sereana Naweni, Aben’s remarkable saves kept Fiji scoreless. Ultimately, they were unable to find the goal they needed.
Looking forward, New Caledonia will compete in the championship final against the winner of the second semi-final match between New Zealand and the Cook Islands, while Fiji will have an opportunity to regroup in the third-place playoff against the loser of that match.
This victory highlights the growing talent in New Caledonian women’s football and raises hopeful prospects for Fiji as they focus on strengthening their squad for future tournaments. The progress of both teams underscores a positive trend in the development of women’s football within the Oceania region, showcasing the potential for emerging nations in the sport.
