India has solidified its ties with Fiji through the recent inauguration of a “Bharat Corner” at the University of Fiji’s library. This special section is dedicated to promoting Indian culture and history, with a particular emphasis on the significance of the Hindi language.

Pundit Bhuwan Dutt, the Pro-Chancellor of UniFiji, highlighted the importance of this initiative as a meaningful step forward in the collaboration between the university and the Indian High Commission. He noted that the Bharat Corner is part of an ongoing series of projects aimed at strengthening cultural ties, building on previous initiatives such as the establishment of the Rabindranath Tagore Centre in 2016 and the recent groundbreaking for the Hindi Studies Centre last December.

Dutt articulated the vital role of literature in education, stating, “At the heart of learning lies books and literature. Books are silent teachers. They do not merely inform; they transform. Through literature, we inherit the wisdom of past generations, understand different cultures, and develop the ability to think critically and, most importantly, compassionately.” His remarks underscore the potential of literature to inspire understanding and empathy across cultures.

Indian High Commissioner Suneet Mehta also praised the inauguration of the Bharat Corner, identifying it as a crucial initiative to improve access to Indian knowledge. He expressed his hope that this space would inspire students, stating, “This corner is not just about India. It is about encouraging young minds to read, question, compare, and discover connections between civilizations. I hope this Bharat Corner becomes a vibrant space for study, reflection, discussion, debate, and inspiration, nurturing a lifelong love for books and learning.”

This newly launched Bharat Corner marks the second such facility in Fiji, following the first established at the Labasa Town Council library. Plans are already underway for a third location in Suva. The opening of these centers signifies a robust commitment to fostering educational growth and cultural exchange, ultimately enriching Fiji’s academic framework and promoting a deeper understanding between India and Fiji.
