Returning to school after years away can be a significant challenge for many adults, but for Reena Ben, it became a pivotal experience that transformed her life. Raised in Toorak and educated at Nehru Memorial School and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, Ms. Ben’s academic journey began with modest results that left her feeling disheartened. “I passed, but my marks were only just above the pass level, and I was never happy with them,” she recalled.
Following her school years, Ms. Ben joined the workforce, securing a position as an office clerk with Shanti Lal Brothers, eventually transitioning to an accounts clerk role. However, she soon realized that her lackluster academic achievements were hindering her career progression. Determined to improve her qualifications, she sought alternatives and was guided to the Nabua Matua Secondary School program, which caters to adult learners eager to continue their education.
This decision proved to be a turning point for her. In 2024, more than two decades after leaving high school, Ms. Ben completed Year 12, finishing first in the annual examinations and earning a gold medal along with the top academic award. “Coming back and achieving this result showed me that nothing is impossible if you work hard,” she stated, reflecting on her remarkable journey.
Although she had previously taken part-time studies at the University of the South Pacific, her recent accomplishments in Year 12 were particularly meaningful to her. She expressed gratitude for the support of her family, which was instrumental in helping her juggle her work, family responsibilities, and studies.
With her academic goals achieved, Ms. Ben is now focused on her aspiration to become a primary schoolteacher. She envisions helping young students, particularly those struggling with confidence, to realize their potential. “I want to help both the students who are doing well and those who are struggling, so that every child has the chance to succeed,” she explained.
Moreover, Ms. Ben aims to motivate other adults, especially women, who may feel discouraged due to past academic failures, encouraging them to return to education. “It is never too late. If you have the ambition and are willing to work hard, you can change your future,” she affirmed, embodying her belief in the power of perseverance and dedication. Her story serves as a beacon of hope, highlighting that it is possible to overcome setbacks and achieve one’s dreams at any stage in life.
