A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck 16 miles north-northeast of Yerington, Northern Nevada, on Monday afternoon, triggering numerous aftershocks throughout the region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the initial quake occurred at 3:08 p.m., and since then, nearly 160 aftershocks have been recorded, predominantly on Monday and early Tuesday.
The Seismological Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno, has indicated that residents can expect to feel aftershocks for several weeks. Central Nevada is known for its seismic activity, and the lab is actively monitoring the situation. Professor Christie Rowe, Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, noted that Reno is situated near major fault lines, including the Mt. Rose fault and additional faults in the Lake Tahoe vicinity, which could generate significant earthquakes in the range of 6 to 7 in magnitude.
The quake’s tremors were felt far beyond Nevada, reaching areas as distant as San Francisco. The University of Nevada, Reno reported at least 32 aftershocks have been detected, emphasizing that more may follow in the coming weeks.
The report elaborated that this earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 7 miles within the Wabuska Lineament fault zone. This fault is part of a larger network of northeast-striking faults in the mountainous region east of Reno, collectively known as the Walker Lane Shear Zone. The geological movements in this area are influenced by the northwest movement of the Pacific tectonic plate relative to the North American plate, contributing to significant seismic activity within the region.
While shaking was reported even in the 2 News Nevada newsroom, there are currently no reports of injuries or damage. Residents who experienced the earthquake are encouraged to report the intensity of the shaking on the USGS website. The Nevada Division of Emergency Management is working in tandem with local and state agencies to evaluate the earthquake’s impact.
