Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for its highly anticipated “Little House on the Prairie” series, set to debut on July 9. In an exciting development, the streaming giant has also confirmed that the show has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its release.
The new adaptation is based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s cherished book series and promises to capture the essence of the stories that have resonated with readers for generations. Described as “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West,” this reimagining offers a multifaceted perspective on the challenges and victories faced by those who helped shape the frontier.
The cast features Alice Halsey in the role of Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as her older sister Mary, Luke Bracey as Pa Charles Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Ma Caroline Ingalls. The show will be led by Rebecca Sonnenshine as the showrunner and executive producer, with notable production contributions from Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel. CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios are collaborating to produce the series for Netflix.
Directorial duties will be handled by a talented lineup including Sarah Adina Smith, Julie Anne Robinson, Kat Candler, Erica Tremblay, and Sydney Freeland, each bringing their unique vision to different episodes.
“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive,” Sonnenshine expressed. “We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the ‘Little House’ books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Wilder originally published eight “Little House” books from the 1930s to the 1940s, with an additional title released posthumously in 1971. The series, which is derived from her childhood experiences in the Midwest during the late 1800s, has sold over 73 million copies to date, underscoring its lasting impact.
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series, highlighted the network’s excitement about the renewal, stating, “We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut. The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
This fresh take on “Little House on the Prairie” not only honors the legacy of Wilder’s work but also aims to engage a new generation of viewers, making it a highly anticipated release in the streaming landscape.
