Netflix’s Death by Lightning: Garfield’s Four-Part Miniseries Reimagines History

A new Netflix miniseries, titled “Death by Lightning,” brings to life the dramatic story of President James Garfield, who was assassinated just six months into his presidency in 1881. This intriguing narrative is drawn from the book “Destiny of the Republic,” authored by Kansas City-based writer Candice Millard.

The show features Michael Shannon portraying Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen in the role of his assassin, Charles Guiteau. The four-episode series takes some creative liberties, as acknowledged by Millard, but retains the essence of her original story. This level of fidelity is often not the case when books are adapted for screen, making Millard’s experience particularly fortunate.

In a statement to KCUR’s Up To Date, Millard expressed her satisfaction with the adaptation, highlighting the collaboration she has enjoyed with the series creator, Mike Makowsky. “I’ve had the complete opposite [experience to some authors], just pure luck,” she said, underscoring the positive relationship she has had throughout the process. Millard’s endorsement of the series is not just a personal win but may also offer viewers an engaging glimpse into a pivotal moment in American history.

With its historical backdrop and character-driven story, “Death by Lightning” promises to captivate audiences while honoring the legacy of Garfield and the turbulent times in which he lived. This miniseries serves as a reminder of the rich storytelling potential found in historical events and the authors who illuminate them through their work.
