NetEase Shakes Up Marvel Rivals Team Amid Layoffs: What’s Next?

NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, has announced layoffs impacting its Seattle design team, citing “organizational reasons.” This news comes shortly after the game director, Thaddeus Sasser, shared on LinkedIn that he and his team were let go despite their significant contributions to the new franchise.

Sasser expressed his surprise on the platform, acknowledging the team’s success with Marvel Rivals, which has gained over 20 million downloads since its launch in December. Reflecting on the industry’s volatility, he encouraged support for displaced team members in their job search.

The decision has led to disappointment in the gaming community, particularly given the successful performance of Marvel Rivals as a free-to-play hero shooter. NetEase released a statement confirming the layoffs but did not disclose the exact number of employees affected. The company emphasized that this restructuring is aimed at optimizing development efficiency without compromising the ongoing support for the game.

The primary development team of Marvel Rivals remains based in China, led by key figures like Lead Producer Weicong Wu. NetEase reassured fans that they are committed to enhancing the game and plan to introduce new characters, maps, and features to maintain an engaging live service experience.

This move follows a broader trend of downsizing at NetEase, which has been reevaluating its global investments and has previously shuttered studios in the U.S. and Japan. Similar shifts were noted earlier this year, reflecting the challenging landscape in the gaming sector.

Despite the ongoing challenges faced by the team, there is hope for a bright future for both the developers and players of Marvel Rivals, as NetEase remains committed to expanding the game’s universe and fostering a vibrant community.
