Nepal’s head coach, Stuart Law, expressed disappointment after his team’s 10-wicket defeat to Italy in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, emphasizing a lack of commitment among players and the distracting influence of social media. During the match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Nepal struggled to build on their earlier performance where they had shown resilience against two-time champions England.

Law highlighted that although social media is a significant aspect of the lives of Nepalese players, it can divert their attention from the sport, which is especially detrimental during a global event like the World Cup. He stated, “If we’re focusing on what we’re doing on social media, or on what people are saying about us on social media, and not focusing on what the team needs… you’re distracted from your actual job.”

He remains hopeful that success on the field will organically enhance their online presence, telling players that wins will lead to increased endorsements and sponsorships. “If you show that cricket in Nepal is going forward and we’re winning games at cricket, your attraction on social media will go through the roof,” he noted.

Reflecting on the significant drop in performance against Italy just days after a competitive game against England, Law remarked on the need for greater mental resilience and commitment to the team. He pointed out that the team needed to transition from the high of near success to maintaining focus and discipline on the cricket field.

Additionally, Law confirmed that captain Rohit Paudel, who had been dealing with a stomach issue, is anticipated to recover in time for their next match on Sunday. Law mentioned, “There’s been a bit of fever going around the World Cup, some stomach issues, etc. But he should be fine for tomorrow.”

As the tournament progresses, it remains crucial for Nepal’s players to concentrate on their performances and avoid the distractions that may arise from external pressures. A united and focused approach could pave the path for better results in the World Cup. The team’s journey undoubtedly reflects the passionate cricket culture in Nepal, and there is hope that they can rise to the occasion in future matches.
