New allegations of sexual misconduct and assault have emerged against acclaimed fantasy author Neil Gaiman, known for his works such as Good Omens, American Gods, and The Sandman, which have all been adapted into popular television series.
New York Magazine reported on these allegations in a cover story titled “There Is No Safe Word,” by writer Lila Shapiro. The article includes interviews with eight women detailing claims against Gaiman. This follows the earlier release of the podcast Master by Tortoise Media in July 2024, which presented graphic accusations from five women, four of whom also spoke to New York Magazine.
Among the serious allegations is one from Scarlett Pavlovich, who previously babysat for Gaiman and his ex-wife, Amanda Palmer. Pavlovich claims she was sexually assaulted by Gaiman in February 2022 in New Zealand, both in a backyard bathtub and later in a hotel room while his son was present. Gaiman’s representatives have vehemently denied these accusations, labeling them “false” and “deplorable.”
A police report was filed against Gaiman for sexual assault in January 2023, but the investigation was eventually closed without charges.
Another account in the New York Magazine piece comes from a woman identified as Brenda (a pseudonym), who met Gaiman in the 1990s at a book signing. She recalls a sexual encounter at a horror convention a few years later, describing Gaiman’s behavior as ritualistic, stating that he seemed to have specific expectations for their interaction.
Despite the gravity of these allegations, Gaiman continues to have significant projects in the works, including the second season of The Sandman on Netflix, the Amazon miniseries Anansi Boys, and a concluding 90-minute episode of Good Omens. The Hollywood Reporter has sought comments from both Netflix and Amazon regarding the impact of these allegations on the upcoming projects, as well as from Gaiman himself.
In response to the allegations, Gaiman’s representatives have claimed that the encounters described were consensual. The unfolding of these events spotlights ongoing discussions around consent and accountability within the entertainment industry, an area that has been under scrutiny for years as more individuals come forward to share their experiences.
