LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Nebraska volleyball team found themselves just three points away from a national championship appearance, but ultimately fell short against Penn State in a thrilling semifinal match. Despite leading 22-16 in game four, the Huskers were unable to secure the final plays needed for victory.
Head Coach John Cook reflected on the match, acknowledging the critical moments where Nebraska missed opportunities to finish strong. “We had that lead in game four, and we hit a couple balls to the libero, and they transitioned,” Cook noted. “It was a great match by both teams. It’s a bummer somebody had to lose it.”
Penn State executed a remarkable comeback, pulling off a reverse sweep with a final score of 23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 28-26, and 15-13, which ended Nebraska’s impressive season.
Harper Murray led Nebraska with 20 kills, 15 digs, six blocks, and three aces, while Andi Jackson set a career high with 19 kills. Nebraska’s performance on the court was commendable, out-performing Penn State in several statistical categories including hitting percentage (.262 to .242), blocks (15 to 10), and digs (72 to 66). However, Penn State’s ability to dominate in clutch plays helped them clinch the win.
Key to Penn State’s success was All-America outside hitter Jess Mruzik, who emerged as a force in the latter part of the match after being contained early on. She ended with a match-high 26 kills, demonstrating her prowess and ability to make crucial plays when it mattered most.
While Nebraska’s season ends with a strong record of 33-3, their journey showcased incredible talent and resilience throughout the season. The young Huskers have gained invaluable experience that will serve them well in upcoming seasons.
As the tournament continues, Penn State will face Louisville for the national title, giving Nebraska fans hope that their talented team can return even stronger next year. The pursuit of excellence is ongoing, and the future looks bright for this resilient squad.
