Neal Schon Teases New Chapter as Journey’s Final Frontier Farewell Tour Begins

For over five decades, Journey has navigated a myriad of lineup changes, emerging stronger after each challenge. Neal Schon, the group’s steadfast guitarist and founder since 1973, has been the sole constant throughout the band’s journey. From the departure of original vocalist Gregg Rolie to the heights of the 1980s with Steve Perry, and later, the re-emergence of the band in the 2000s, Journey’s story is one of resilience and reinvention. The band is now preparing to embark on the Final Frontier farewell tour, which begins in February in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and is set to continue into the following year.

Though keyboardist Jonathan Cain has announced his intention to retire after the tour, Schon has made it clear that he plans to keep the Journey spirit alive. “I carry the Journey torch wherever I go,” he stated in a recent press release about the tour. “This marks a farewell to one powerful chapter, but I’m not done.”

In recent months, Schon has been busy writing and recording music while reflecting on the upcoming tour. He explained that the farewell tour idea stemmed from Cain’s desire for closure after the tour. However, Schon emphasized that while the tour signifies an ending, the journey itself will continue, albeit in a different form. “The heart and soul of the band is going to go with me,” he remarked.

The farewell tour will consist of about 120 shows, featuring “An Evening with Journey,” where the band will perform two full sets without an opening act, making it a unique experience for fans. Schon expressed his excitement about digging into songs that haven’t been played in years and providing a longer show without time constraints, allowing for musical explorations and improvised jams. He assured fans that they would also hear all the beloved anthems, alongside songs from the later albums as well.

While Schon noted the challenge that the lengthy tour might pose for lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, he is confident in the vocal talents within their lineup, stating that other band members will share some vocal duties. This arrangement allows for flexibility and rest, especially given Pineda’s extensive tenure and the demanding vocal range required for Journey’s signature songs.

The tour has also raised questions about the continuation of the Journey brand beyond this farewell chapter. Schon hinted at potential changes while acknowledging a desire for a creative evolution. “I want to cut some new ground and go into some new areas that we haven’t done,” he shared, revealing an openness to explore new musical endeavors after the tour concludes.

Fans have often expressed a longing to see former frontman Steve Perry reconnect with the band, particularly during this farewell tour. Schon remains optimistic about a possible reconciliation. “The door is always open,” he said, reflecting on the past chemistry between them and the hope for future collaboration.

As Journey gears up for its farewell tour, fans are left to ponder the essence of the band’s legacy and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for Schon. While this chapter may close, the hope remains that the spirit of Journey will continue to inspire and entertain, possibly leading to new projects, including a venture Schon hinted at called “Journey Beyond.” This phrase embodies the idea of moving forward while cherishing the band’s rich history. As they prepare to take the stage once more, the anticipation of both nostalgia and innovation is sure to resonate deeply with audiences around the world.
