The NCAA has denied the eligibility waiver request of Trinidad Chambliss, the Ole Miss quarterback, which means that his collegiate career may be coming to an end following a loss in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Miami. Ole Miss has indicated that they intend to appeal the decision.
In a statement released by the NCAA, they noted that the university’s request, filed in November, sought to extend Chambliss’s five-year Division I eligibility due to an incapacitating illness or injury. However, they stated the request lacked necessary medical documentation from his treating physician at the time of his injury or illness. While Ole Miss provided some medical notes, including a report from December 2022 that indicated Chambliss was “doing very well,” the NCAA found these documents insufficient. Furthermore, the previous institution attended by Chambliss reported it did not have any medical documentation regarding his treatment during that timeframe.
This decision remains consistent with the NCAA’s rules surrounding eligibility extensions, as they have received numerous extension requests throughout the academic year. The NCAA approved only a minority of these cases, all of which were accompanied by the requisite medical documentation, while multiple requests were denied for lack of such evidence.
Chambliss’s case relied heavily on the argument that he was unable to play during the 2022 season at Ferris State due to health issues that required surgery. His attorney, Tom Mars, has emphasized that they believe they have adequate evidence to support their case, citing the NCAA’s own rules.
After being at Ferris State for four years, Chambliss decided to transfer to Ole Miss, announcing his decision in April 2025. He had a commendable senior season, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards with 22 touchdowns and three interceptions, earning him the SEC Newcomer of the Year accolade.
While disappointment is evident, especially from his attorney who stated the only score that matters is that at the end of the game, there is a glimmer of hope as Ole Miss moves forward with the appeal. This could lead to a different outcome as they seek to bring the matter to a more equitable resolution. Regardless of the challenges faced, there is optimism in the legal approach that may redefine Chambliss’s future.
