NC State’s Rocky Road: Can They Bounce Back from Humiliation?

Entering this match, there was hope for NC State to find something positive after a rocky start to the season. However, what unfolded was an alarming display of ineptitude from the start.

The game slipped away as soon as it became clear that NC State’s defense was not prepared, evident during Clemson’s second offensive drive. After a few first downs, Clemson quickly turned the momentum back in their favor, scoring an uncomplicated touchdown that made the score 14-0 in the first quarter.

Things took a turn for the worse when quarterback CJ Bailey failed to notice pressure from the defense and lost the ball on a hard hit, providing Clemson with a prime opportunity to extend their lead. At that point, it felt like NC State’s chances were diminished before the halfway mark of the second quarter, especially given that they were on the road with a freshman at quarterback.

This was one of the most humiliating performances NC State has experienced in years. Allowing over 400 yards in a single half possibly marked the lowest point for defensive coordinator Tony Gibson’s tenure. The lackluster effort raised questions, as it appeared the team assumed they didn’t need to try hard due to their circumstances.

While expectations for the offense were low, the bigger concern is the defense’s abysmal performance—entirely uncompetitive from the outset. Clemson amassed 160 yards during their first two drives, filled with substantial gains.

By halftime, Clemson had posted 45 points, leaving NC State in a position where they seemed inept in the second half. The Tigers took their foot off the pedal, even rotating in backup players.

This experience was unfamiliar and disappointing for the NC State fanbase. The limitations of the team were apparent; they featured an average defensive line and poorly performing linebackers. This could be tolerable if there was effort and execution, but those were lacking as well. The entire situation has spiraled downward, with Clemson highlighting these issues.

Recovery from this point seems daunting, and while it is challenging to navigate a season with a less talented roster, failing to give consistent effort complicates matters significantly. A lack of pride and determination was evident, culminating in incidents like Anthony Belton’s ejection after spitting at an opponent. The team’s overall energy was disheartening, emphasizing the need for head coach Dave Doeren to instill a revitalized spirit.

Doeren has successfully turned teams around in the past, but this presents a unique set of challenges as players took in too much praise over the summer regarding their potential and the capabilities of their new transfer players. At 2-2, the situation isn’t catastrophic, but it certainly isn’t ideal. Past seasons have proven they can be lengthy.

Nonetheless, the challenges faced now are more significant than those of the previous year, with serious underlying issues within the team. If NC State cannot unite in terms of effort, the outlook may continue to worsen.
