The NBA is revisiting an investigation involving Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes following the release of a video related to a past incident with his ex-girlfriend, Sofia Jamora. The video surfaced online, showcasing an altercation that took place on July 28, 2021, prompting NBA spokesman Mike Bass to announce the reopening of the investigation in a statement to ESPN.
In the footage, which lasts nearly six minutes, Hayes appears to be involved in a heated argument with Jamora. She can be heard pleading for him to stop and letting go of her, while Hayes responds with frustration. The confrontation escalates, leading Jamora to assert that she would no longer allow him to treat her violently. At one point, Hayes walks away but then spits in her direction.
At the time of this incident, Hayes was with the New Orleans Pelicans and faced significant legal consequences following the confrontation. He was arrested for pushing a police officer, subsequently tased, and charged with multiple offenses. He later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges for false imprisonment and resisting an officer. As part of his sentence, he was placed on three years of probation, required to complete 450 hours of community service, and attend a year of domestic violence classes.
Now in his second season with the Lakers, Hayes is contributing an average of 5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a reserve.
This investigation highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and the NBA’s commitment to addressing serious behavioral issues. While this situation is concerning, it also serves as an opportunity for growth and reflection for Hayes as he continues to develop both on and off the court. The focus now should be on promoting a culture of respect and responsibility within the league, offering support to those involved in similar situations.
