The NBA is setting its sights on launching NBA Europe in October 2027, with ambitions to capture the attention of media rights holders among major global platforms. A recent report by CNBC’s Alex Sherman revealed that the league has engaged in discussions with several prominent companies, including Amazon and YouTube, to potentially broadcast NBA Europe games, though no official announcement has been made yet.

This development follows a recent 11-year agreement between the NBA and Amazon, granting the latter exclusive access to a select number of games via Prime Video. Despite the current uncertainty regarding the financial prospects for broadcasting NBA Europe, as audience data remains unclear, the league’s innovative approach may alleviate some concerns from prospective partners.

NBA Europe is poised to establish a unique structure, featuring a stable lineup of 10 to 12 teams based in major European cities. Notably, some teams are expected to be affiliated with renowned soccer clubs; Real Madrid is already in high-level discussions with the NBA. This stable presence in significant cities represents a strong selling point for potential broadcast partners.

Additionally, the league is expected to incorporate four to six open spots for teams through performance-based selection, mirroring the promotion-relegation dynamic inherent in many European leagues. This competitive structure could enhance the appeal of the league and its broadcast potential.

One exciting prospect that could boost television revenue involves crossover events between NBA teams and those from the NBA Europe. While no formal affiliations are planned, there may be preseason games and, in the future, participation from NBA Europe clubs in the NBA Cup mid-season tournament. NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum commented on the anticipated growth of the league, indicating that as its quality improves, so may the interaction between both leagues.

With nearly 20 months remaining until its anticipated debut, the NBA has ample time to solidify partnerships with potential broadcasters, aiming for a platform that boasts a global reach.
