Navy’s Historic Win: Peele’s Record-Breaking Game Sparks 6-0 Start

Annapolis, Md. — Cornerback Dashaun Peele made history by becoming the first Navy player to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a single game, while quarterback Blake Horvath tossed three touchdown passes as the No. 25 Midshipmen dominated Charlotte with a score of 51-17 on Saturday. This victory marked Navy’s first 6-0 start since 1979 and improved their conference record to 4-0 in the American Athletic Conference. With this win, the Midshipmen have also become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2019. Charlotte fell to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Navy coach Brian Newberry expressed confidence in his team’s focus and work ethic, attributing their success not just to talent but to character and preparation. Peele’s impressive performance featured a 61-yard and an 84-yard interception return. Navy’s defense was especially strong, forcing five turnovers, their highest number since 2019. Peele credited his preparation throughout the week for being in the right place during the game.

Horvath completed 7 of 13 passes for 117 yards and has accumulated 10 touchdown passes this season, just three shy of the school record set by Ricky Dobbs in 2010. Fullback Alex Tecza demonstrated his prowess by scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter, contributing with two rushing touchdowns and a 46-yard reception.

Horvath emphasized the team’s strategy for a quick start, recognizing its importance for both the offense and defense. Tight end Cody Howard and wide receiver Brandon Chatman also contributed with touchdown receptions of 11 yards and 19 yards, respectively.

For Charlotte, quarterback Max Brown threw two touchdown passes, including a 20-yard pass to O’Mega Blake and a 13-yard pass to Duane Thomas Jr. Coach Biff Poggi expressed frustration over the team’s performance, particularly in light of their preparations aimed at securing possession of the ball. Despite the setback, Charlotte has a chance to still become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2019.

In terms of Navy’s recent form, they have established a potent offense and a defense capable of creating turnovers, positioning them as strong contenders for the American Athletic Conference title and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.

Navy had been flawless in the red zone until a newly established field goal with under three minutes remaining in the first quarter, ending their perfect scoring streak. The Midshipmen are now ranked for the first time in four years and could see a rise in their rankings based on upcoming games.

Next week, Charlotte will face Memphis, while Navy is set to compete against No. 12 Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
