ANAPOLIS, Md. — Cornerback Dashaun Peele made history by becoming the first player in Navy’s program to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game, while quarterback Blake Horvath threw three touchdown passes in a dominant 51-17 victory over Charlotte on Saturday. The win improved Navy’s record to 6-0, marking their best start since 1979, and they remain unbeaten at 4-0 in the American Athletic Conference. This victory also makes the Midshipmen bowl-eligible for the first time since 2019. Charlotte fell to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Navy head coach Brian Newberry praised the team’s dedication, stating, “It’s a team that is focused on the work and the process.” He expressed confidence in the team’s potential to reach a bowl game, emphasizing that it was based more on character and work ethic than sheer talent. Peele’s impressive interceptions included a 61-yard return and an 84-yarder, contributing to Navy forcing five turnovers, their highest number since 2019. “I feel like I was at the right place at the right time,” Peele said of his performance.

Horvath completed 7 of 13 passes for 117 yards in the game, bringing his season total to 10 touchdown passes, just three shy of the school record. Fullback Alex Tecza stood out with three touchdowns in the first quarter, scoring on two red zone runs and a 46-yard reception.

“We really put an emphasis on a quick start,” Horvath noted, adding that it benefited the defense significantly. Navy’s tight end Cody Howard also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass, while wide receiver Brandon Chatman added a 19-yard scoring reception.

For Charlotte, quarterback Max Brown threw two touchdown passes, including a 20-yarder to O’Mega Blake and a 13-yarder to Duane Thomas Jr. Charlotte coach Biff Poggi expressed frustration with the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of the game and the multiple turnovers that hindered their chances.

In summary, despite the loss, Charlotte has seen recent success, winning three of its last five games, with a roster featuring 71 newcomers. As they enter their 10th year competing in the FBS, Charlotte still has a shot at bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019. Meanwhile, Navy’s impressive offensive play and ability to create turnovers could position them well for contention in the American Athletic Conference and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Navy had previously scored touchdowns on all 20 of their red zone attempts until Nathan Kirkwood kicked a 22-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

Navy is ranked for the first time since 2019, when they finished with an 11-2 record. Their ranking could improve based on other teams’ performances in the coming weeks.

Next, Charlotte will take on Memphis, while Navy faces No. 12 Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
