A young couple from Nausori has appeared in the High Court in Suva facing grave accusations related to the alleged sexual violation and trafficking of their underage niece. The man is charged with two counts of rape, while both he and his wife face charges of domestic trafficking in children, with the case authorized by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The prosecution asserts that the couple brought their 14-year-old niece to a hotel room in Nausori, where the woman is alleged to have groomed the girl before the man sexually assaulted her on two different occasions. Both accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges during their court appearance earlier this month.
On December 11, State prosecutor Zenith Zunaid presented the court with additional disclosures, which included a transcript from a video-recorded interview with the couple. Justice Dane Tuiqereqere granted an extension of the couple’s bail and adjourned the case until January 22 of the following year.
This disturbing case underscores the critical concerns surrounding child protection and the significant implications such actions have on the lives of vulnerable individuals. As the legal process continues, the court is expected to closely monitor the proceedings, highlighting society’s commitment to justice and the safety of children.
