The Northern Arizona women’s volleyball team is set to host both the University of Montana and Montana State University this week as they aim to maintain their top position in the Big Sky Conference standings. The Lumberjacks currently boast an impressive record of 17 wins and 5 losses overall, with 7 victories against just 2 defeats in conference play. Both matches will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
The action kicks off on October 30 when the Lumberjacks take on the Grizzlies at 6:30 p.m. MST. This matchup marks the second showcase of the Astrojacks, a creative initiative by NAU Athletics that highlights the astronomic legacy of Flagstaff, recognized as the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001. Attendees can anticipate an engaging atmosphere filled with unique festivities, including asteroid-themed treats and the first 100 students receiving special Astrojacks pickleball paddles.
The Montana Grizzlies, who currently share the second-place spot in the conference with a record of 6-3, come into the match riding a wave of momentum after defeating Weber State 3-1 in their previous game. Notably, this victory marked Montana’s first win against the Wildcats since 2017. Historically, NAU holds a narrow edge over Montana in their all-time series at 38-37, with their last encounter resulting in a 3-1 loss for the Lumberjacks earlier this month in Missoula. The Grizzlies are impressive this season, leading the conference in points, kills, assists, and digs per set.
Montana State also boasts a 6-3 Big Sky record and stands at 11 wins and 9 losses overall. The Bobcats are coming off a strong performance where they defeated Weber State and swept Idaho State. Notably, Lauren Lindseth from Montana State has been recognized as the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week, underscoring her outstanding play, particularly with an average of 5.57 digs per set.
In their latest matchup, Montana State edged out NAU with a close 3-2 victory. However, Northern Arizona has been performing strongly at home, having won their last nine games on their own court. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series against the Bobcats at 44-32.
Star player Hanah Stoddard continues to shine, ranking second in the Big Sky for both kills and points per set, while also contributing significantly on the defensive end. Other key players include Melia Barlow and Kylie Moran, who are also making their mark in the standings.
Looking ahead, the Lumberjacks will be hitting the road for critical matches against Sacramento State and Portland State next week, indicating a busy and exciting schedule as they strive to enhance their position in the conference. Fans are encouraged to follow the team on social media platforms for the latest updates on their journey this season.
