Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, will be honored at a funeral service on January 9 at Washington National Cathedral. Following an invitation from Congress, he will also lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. President Joe Biden has emphasized his admiration for Carter, characterizing him as a “man of principle, faith, and humility.” To honor Carter’s contributions, Biden has declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning, mandating the closure of all federal agencies on that day.
Carter’s journey to the final farewell will begin with several days of commemorative events. On January 4, a motorcade will honor Carter in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, including a visit to his childhood home. A service at The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta is scheduled for the same day. Carter will lie in repose at the presidential library on January 5 and 6 before his transfer to Washington on January 7.
Throughout his life, Carter was known for his dedication to public service and humanitarian efforts. His relationship with Biden dates back to 1976 when Biden endorsed his presidential campaign as a young senator. In an emotional tribute, Biden recalled how Carter supported him during his son Beau’s battle with cancer.
Carter will be laid to rest in his native Georgia, beside his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away last year at 96. Together, they envisioned their final resting place near the pond on their family property, reflecting the deep bond they shared throughout their 77 years of marriage.
