KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Natalie Haslam, a cherished figure in Knoxville and esteemed philanthropist, has died at the age of 94, as confirmed by a release from MC2 Consulting.

A proud graduate of the University of Tennessee in 1952, Haslam made history as the first woman to have a college named after her at UT. She also held the distinction of being the first female president of the Knoxville Symphony Society. Throughout her life, she was deeply engaged in Knoxville’s business, civic, and philanthropic endeavors.

In 2006, she and her husband, James A. Haslam II, founder of Pilot Corporation, made a significant impact through a $32.5 million donation to the University of Tennessee, with $10 million earmarked for the School of Music. This generous gift paved the way for the creation of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, which opened its doors in 2013 and was dedicated in her honor in 2024.

Recognized for her contributions, Haslam was named East Tennessean of the Year by the East Tennessee Historical Society in 2018. Reflecting on her love for music, she stated, “I am not a musician, but music has always meant a lot to me,” emphasizing its importance in everyday life, from celebrations to sporting events.

Her leadership extended to numerous cultural and civic organizations, where she served as president for the East Tennessee Foundation, East Tennessee Historical Society, Knoxville Garden Club, and the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Greater Knoxville. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and participated on various boards, including the Tennessee Arts Commission and Zoo Knoxville.

Born to Dr. Robert S. and Jennie Belle Leach, Haslam raised her family in Knoxville’s Sequoyah Hills neighborhood. She is survived by her three daughters, three stepchildren, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, leaving behind a lasting legacy of community service and dedication.

Natalie Haslam’s contributions to Knoxville will be remembered for generations, inspiring many to continue her work in philanthropy and community enrichment.
