Residents of Nasinu have received assurances that the development of a public recreational area remains a top priority, even as evaluations are underway to consider Valelevu Ground as a potential site for a new national hospital. Maciu Naulumisa, the Minister for Local Government, stated that while the Valelevu Ground was originally slated for recreational use, the Nasinu Town Council also recognizes the substantial benefits that the hospital project could bring to the wider community.
Naulumisa explained that the Ministry of Health has hired consultants to assess various locations, with Valelevu Ground selected for further examination due to its logistical benefits. He acknowledged the importance of this site in the context of key national development but assured that the Nasinu Town Council is actively looking for alternative sites to ensure that residents still have access to recreational facilities.
Over the years, Valelevu Ground has been the focus of many development proposals. In 2015, it was proposed as a potential site for an international stadium. Additionally, Naulumisa mentioned that earlier this year, there were discussions regarding a dual-purpose commercial and recreational development plan, as the site had been reported to be financially struggling.
The Minister emphasized the need to strike a balance between national infrastructure requirements and community recreational spaces. He highlighted the significance of ongoing consultations in achieving this goal. The commitment to addressing both the infrastructural needs of the country and the recreational aspirations of the local community reflects a comprehensive approach to development in Nasinu. This thoughtful consideration provides hope for a future where both health and leisure can flourish together.
