President-elect Donald Trump has revealed his intention to nominate billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman as the new head of NASA. Trump praised Isaacman’s upcoming role, emphasizing that he is poised to lead NASA’s mission of discovery, inspiring groundbreaking advancements in space science, technology, and exploration.
At 41, Isaacman is the founder and CEO of Shift4, a payment processing company. Although he has made significant strides in commercial spaceflight, having personally funded and flown on two SpaceX missions, he has no prior experience with NASA or federal government roles. In his own words, Isaacman expressed his gratitude for the nomination, citing his passion for America’s role in space exploration, having witnessed the beauty of Earth from space.
Isaacman shares a close relationship with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who was also selected by Trump to co-lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency.” Musk extended his congratulations to Isaacman on social media.
In 2022, Isaacman worked alongside Musk and SpaceX to initiate the Polaris Program, a series of private spaceflights aimed at developing technologies for deep space exploration. His first mission, Polaris Dawn, made history by including the first all-civilian spacewalk.
If confirmed, Isaacman will take over NASA at a crucial juncture, as the agency gears up for upcoming missions aimed at returning humans to the moon. Currently, Bill Nelson serves as NASA’s administrator, having held the position since May 2021 after a lengthy career as a senator and congressman. Nelson, a former astronaut, conducted notable science experiments during his own spaceflight on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1986.
