Residents of Naqamekaka Settlement in Bua are rejoicing over a crucial upgrade to their transportation infrastructure, following the recent inauguration of a new community access road—the first direct vehicle access for the area in more than half a century. The road was officially opened by Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, who underscored the vital role of connectivity in rural communities.
“This road is about restoring dignity and creating opportunity. No community should be left behind simply because of where they live,” Bulitavu remarked during the ceremony. He asserted that this new roadway represents a significant advancement for the settlement, promising to improve safety and ease daily life for residents, particularly benefiting children and farmers.
The $40,000 project, funded through the Government’s Community Access Road and Footpath Program (CARFF), replaces a narrow, muddy path that previously posed numerous travel hazards. Laisiasa Taukena, the community leader, recounted the difficulties faced by residents, explaining how adverse weather often resulted in school absences for children and dangerous delays in accessing necessary medical care.
With the new infrastructure in place, farmers can now transport their produce more efficiently, and families can reach schools and healthcare services without the frustrating delays that plagued them before. There are also plans to establish a small community canteen aimed at boosting household incomes and providing local job opportunities.
This development not only promises to elevate the living standards of Naqamekaka’s residents but also illustrates a broader commitment to rural development and community enhancement.
