A 43-year-old man, Samuela Salusalu, is facing charges in connection with the tragic death of 16-year-old Salote Sikiti in Naqali Village earlier this month. During a court session yesterday, Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola ordered a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation for Salusalu, expressing concerns regarding his mental state at the time of the alleged offense.
The magistrate also mandated that Salusalu remain in custody as investigations proceed. The case has been adjourned until January 5, 2026, for further mention. Salusalu is accused of attacking Sikiti with a cane knife, causing injuries that ultimately led to her death. The alleged incident reportedly took place while the victim was on her way home from a store in the village.
The court hearing highlighted the importance of the forthcoming psychiatric report to assess Salusalu’s mental fitness for trial, with no plea entered during the proceedings. As the situation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for a thorough investigation into this tragic incident.
