Namuka Secondary School in Macuata has made history by welcoming its first cohort of 20 students and six teachers, marking a significant step forward for education in the rural Namuka District. This new institution comes in response to longstanding challenges faced by students who previously had to endure long journeys to attend Nadogo Secondary School or relocate to Labasa for their education.

The school’s principal, Eroni Matatia, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for Education for approving the establishment of the school. He highlighted the excitement shared among parents, teachers, and students with the introduction of secondary education more accessible to the community. Matatia pointed out that all teachers at the school come from the Namuka District, which fosters a sense of community ownership and reinforces their commitment to nurturing the success of their students.

“We are starting with 20 students, and among them are three or four who have been out of school for more than two years. We are welcoming them back and providing another chance for education. Our committed teaching staff, all local, met yesterday and are ready to help these students forge a path toward a brighter future,” Matatia stated.

Parents have expressed overwhelming support for the new school, seeing it as a significant relief from the challenges of long commutes, especially in adverse weather conditions. “We are very happy about this new school because it helps us as parents. Previously, we had to send our children to Nadogo Secondary, which was difficult during bad weather. Now, reaching the school is much easier by boat or RSL,” said one parent.

The opening of Namuka Secondary School, which currently serves students in Years 9 and 10, highlights the importance of enhancing educational access in rural areas. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay actively engaged in their children’s education, as such involvement remains crucial for academic success. The establishment of this school not only signifies a new beginning for the students and the community but also offers a hopeful outlook for the future of education in the region.
