Twenty students and six teachers have made history as the inaugural cohort at Namuka Secondary School in Macuata, a significant advancement for education in the rural Namuka District. This new establishment responds to long-standing challenges that students faced, who previously had to endure lengthy travel to attend Nadogo Secondary School or relocate to Labasa for their education.
School principal Eroni Matatia expressed gratitude to the Minister for Education for approving the new school, emphasizing the excitement shared by parents, teachers, and students at the introduction of secondary education closer to home. He noted that all teachers at the school hail from the Namuka District, fostering community ownership and reinforcing the commitment to the success of the students.
“We are starting with 20 students, and among them are three or four who have been out of school for more than two years. We are welcoming them back and providing another chance for education. The teaching staff, all local to this area, met yesterday and are dedicated to guiding these students towards a brighter future,” Matatia remarked.
Parents have warmly embraced the new school, viewing it as a significant relief for families now spared the risks of long and challenging commutes, particularly during inclement weather. “We are very happy about this new school because it helps us as parents. Previously, we had to send our children to Nadogo Secondary, which was difficult during bad weather. Now, reaching the school is much easier by boat or RSL,” one parent noted.
The opening of Namuka Secondary School, which currently offers classes for Years 9 and 10, underscores the importance of expanding educational access in rural communities. Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain actively involved in their children’s education, as strong engagement continues to be essential for academic success. The establishment of this school not only marks a new chapter for the students and the community but also serves as a hopeful sign for the future of education in the region.
