The future of Special Prospecting Licence 1420, associated with the Namosi Joint Venture, now rests with Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo. The Mineral Resources Department has stated that they are in the process of reviewing the technical components of the licence renewal application; however, the ultimate decision to approve or deny it lies with the minister.
Apete Soro, the Director of the Mineral Resources Department, addressed the pressing concerns of Namosi landowners, which were formally conveyed to the Minister’s office following a recent meeting. During this gathering, landowners voiced their growing frustrations and have requested a response regarding the licence renewal within a two-week timeframe.
Soro underscored the significance of acknowledging both the landowners’ perspectives and those of the mining firm involved. He expressed his commitment to delivering their message to the minister’s office, anticipating a response within the specified period. “Because we’ve witnessed the atmosphere of the landowners, what they’re after, and as well as the company. So yes, we’ll go and convey the message to his office, and we’re expecting also that he can make a response or put in a response within two weeks,” he remarked.
As the Mineral Resources Department continues to evaluate the necessary technical requirements, Minister Vosarogo will take into account various factors, including broader policy implications and national interests, before arriving at a conclusive decision. The Namosi Joint Venture is supported by several major international mining firms, including Australia’s Newcrest, the United States’ Newmont, and Japan’s Nitetsu and Mitsubishi. These companies have been exploring the copper potential in the Nabukebuke land in Namosi since 2001.
