Namosi Clinches Historic First Marama Cup, Ending Suva’s Dominance

After enduring disappointment in two consecutive finals against Suva, Namosi has achieved a monumental victory, claiming their first Subrails Marama Cup title with a thrilling 34–24 win at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This victory marked a significant milestone for Namosi in the women’s rugby competition, as they decisively ended Suva’s dominance.

Namosi showcased their strength throughout the match, with six tries compared to Suva’s four. The game started with Suva seizing the lead in the 8th minute when Teresia Matea scored. However, Namosi quickly equalized with Rusila Nagasau scoring just a minute later, setting a competitive tone for the rest of the match.

The momentum shifted in favor of Namosi as they built a substantial 24–14 lead by halftime, bolstered by tries from Ivamere Rokowati and Josivini Naihamu, while Livia Naidei managed to score Suva’s second try in the 32nd minute.

In the second half, Naidei continued to press forward for Suva, scoring again in the 50th minute, but Namosi quickly retaliated. Filomena Niulele and Miliana Duikoro added to their tally with two more tries, extending their lead. Though Varitema Adi scored a late consolation try for Suva, it was not enough to alter the outcome.

This championship win for Namosi not only offers redemption after previous losses but also reflects the team’s growth and determination in the sport. It highlights the vibrancy of women’s rugby in Fiji, where competitive spirit and resilience are palpable. The performance of Namosi, particularly their leadership under players like Rusila Nagasau, underscores their potential to become a dominant force in future competitions, inspiring the next generation of athletes in the region.
