A Malaysian ethnic Chinese rapper and filmmaker, known as Namewee, has been detained to assist law enforcement in the investigation surrounding the murder of Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin. The investigation took a significant turn when authorities reclassified Hsieh’s death as a murder after discovering new, yet unspecified, evidence.
Wee Meng Chee, 42, surrendered to police early on Wednesday and is set to remain in remand for six days, according to his lawyer. Hsieh, who garnered over half a million followers on Instagram and was known for operating an OnlyFans account, was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur on October 22. Reports indicate that Wee was the last individual seen with Hsieh prior to her death.
This isn’t the first time Namewee has found himself in legal trouble. He was previously detained and faced charges related to drug possession and consumption, which he has consistently denied. After his surrender, he expressed his sorrow over Hsieh’s passing, emphasizing his intention to fully cooperate with the investigation to provide clarity for both the public and Hsieh’s family.
Hsieh, 31, who was a former nurse and popularly referred to as “Nurse Goddess” among her fans, arrived in Malaysia on October 20 for a four-day visit.
