The Nakasi Police Station, valued at $36 million, was officially inaugurated today by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad. While the station has been operational since its completion in 2023, the ceremony marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to enhancing public safety.
Situated in a strategically important location, the Nakasi Police Station serves over 45,000 residents along the Nakasi corridor. It functions as a central hub for the Eastern Division Headquarters, overseeing five police stations and 13 community posts across the provinces of Tailevu, Naitasiri, Rewa, and Lomaiviti. During the inauguration, Minister Prasad emphasized the government’s dedication to strengthening the Fiji Police Force through ongoing investment, aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness within the organization.
This ceremony occurs at a crucial time, as the Fiji Police Force is expected to undergo significant upgrades in operational capabilities, further supported by recent budget discussions. A remarkable budget increase of $13.5 million will raise the total funding for the police force to $240.3 million. This boost is instrumental in the recruitment of 1,000 new officers, which will increase personnel strength to over 6,550 and significantly enhance police visibility across the nation.
Minister Prasad noted that the government’s investment in police manpower has already led to a remarkable 20% increase in personnel, reflecting the administration’s faith in the leadership of the Force. He reiterated that while national development is critical, ensuring public safety remains a top priority. The Minister encouraged the community to work alongside the police and government to uphold the law and promote peace within their neighborhoods.
