Residents and vendors in Nakasi are raising alarms about a persistent foul odor, which they believe is stemming from the local abattoir. This unpleasant smell has been impacting not only Nakasi but also extending to neighboring areas such as Waidamudamu and Wainibuku.

Local resident Joan Watkins described the situation as a serious health risk, having experienced the odor since moving to Nakasi years ago. “I have been smelling this foul odour ever since I started living in Nakasi. It has been going on for years, and it is unpleasant. You can smell it both in the morning and in the afternoon,” Watkins shared. She pointed out that the health risks are particularly alarming with children in the vicinity and a local hospital close by.

The Ministry of Agriculture had previously indicated intentions to relocate the abattoir due to ongoing developments and the emergence of new businesses in Nakasi. This revelation has ignited hope among residents that authorities will take prompt measures to address their concerns.

Further inquiries have been made to the Fiji Meat Industries Board regarding the odor issue, as residents actively seek both clarity and a resolution. As the community unites in their call for change, there is a sense of optimism that their collective voices will lead to improvements in living conditions, fostering a healthier environment for everyone in Nakasi.
