Naitasiri Rugby’s strategic depth was on full display as they secured a confident 32–18 victory over Ba in their Skipper Cup quarterfinal at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. Coach Ilaitia Tuisese implemented a bold rotation strategy, with nearly half of the matchday squad different from the previous week. Despite a slow start, the team’s ability to adapt under pressure highlighted the strong depth within the Naitasiri camp.
Ba initially showcased their strength, controlling possession and leading early on with two penalty kicks from fly-half William Ryland. However, Naitasiri found their rhythm, responding with a try from Fiji Water Flying Fijians representative Kavaia Tagivetaua in the 13th minute. Although the conversion was missed, this moment marked a turning point for Naitasiri. Following a yellow card issued to Ba’s Jone Naqiri, Naitasiri surged ahead, scoring another try by Sakaraia Soqonakalou.
At halftime, Naitasiri led 17-6, thanks in part to a converted try by fullback Senijiale Qiokata. The second half saw further extension of their lead with another unconverted try from Soqonakalou and a penalty from Etonia Rokotuisawa. Although Ba managed to score a try through Meli Tuvusa, Naitasiri’s determined effort culminated in another unconverted try, sealing the match at 32-18.
Tuisese praised his players for their commitment and resilience throughout the match, acknowledging the work that still lies ahead as they prepare for the semifinals against Tailevu. The community’s robust support is a clear indication of hope and excitement surrounding Naitasiri’s progressing journey in Fijian rugby.
This victory is not just a testament to Naitasiri’s talent and depth but also a reflection of the vibrant rugby culture in Fiji, as the team rallies its fans and continues to aim for glory in the prestigious Skipper Cup.
